Ruffner Mountain Nature Center Wetlands

Birmingham, Alabama

The wetlands were created as a demonstration for park visitors. It was designed to capture runoff and overflow from an existing artesian well spring and filter it through a series of terrace basins with walkways undulating in and around all three basins. Native plants were used throughout the area with aquatic plans in the standing water and plants that can handle wet and dry conditions in the upper areas. Informal seating of boulders are used as an outdoor classroom. Future expansion will include a green building for a ranger station, composting toilets, and a new entry road to the mountain on the Irondale side.
