Shades Creek Greenway is a multi-use trail for pedestrian and cycling activities in the Birmingham Metropolitan Area. Jane Ross' involvement with the tail started in the early 1990's when she assisted the City of Homewood in obtaining Congestion and Mitigation & Air Quality Funding to implement a trail and was the project manager for the first phase. Later, as the project landscape architect for the Red Rock Trail System for Jefferson County, the trail was identified as the central portion of a larger corridor following Shades Creek through numerous municipalities from the City of Birmingham to Hoover. The City of Homewood is now looking at implementing phases II and III.

The trail connects two high schools, five neighborhoods, a senior living community, West Homewood Park, Homewood Soccer Complex, two shopping areas, and a university. Well used, the trail has been an inspiration for trail development throughout the state, improving overall quality of life. Few developments provide an alternate mode of transportation (walking and cycling), improve health with active lifestyles, improve property value, and provide environmental protection and awareness of our greenspace and waterways.
